How to care for brass at home
Water marks, patina and polish — a short, practical guide to keeping brass looking its age.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and it changes with use. A little patina is not damage; it is the surface settling.
Everyday care
Wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth after use. If a piece has held water, dry it upside down so the inside can drain. Avoid dishwasher detergents, which strip the surface.
When you want shine
Use a brass paste sparingly, on a soft cloth, and buff in one direction. Wash off the residue and dry immediately. Do not polish the inside of water vessels — a thin patina is desirable there.
Storage
Store pieces separately, or wrap them in cotton, so edges do not scratch. Humid coastal air will darken brass faster; that is normal.
